Origin of Synchronized Traffic Flow on Highways and Its Dynamic Phase Transitions
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the traffic flow on a highway with ramps through numerical simulations of a hydrodynamic traffic flow model. It is found that the presence of the external vehicle flux through ramps generates a new state of “recurring humps” (RH). This novel dynamic state is characterized by temporal oscillations of the vehicle density and velocity which are localized near ramps, and found to be the origin of the synchronized traffic flow reported recently [Kerner and Rehborn, 79, 4030 (1997)]. We also argue that the dynamic phase transitions between the free flow and the RH state can be interpreted as a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. [S0031-9007(98)06771-4]

An Optimal Dynamic Control Method for an Isolated Intersection Using Fuzzy Systems
Traffic flow systems are nonlinear and uncertain, so it is very difficult to find their optimal points. In traditional traffic control systems, the traffic lights of crossings change in a fixed time period that is not optimal. On the other hand, most proposed systems are sufficiently capable of coping with the uncertainties of traffic flow. To solve this problem, there is a need to develop expe...
متن کاملOrder Parameter as an Additional State Variable of Unstable Traffic Flow
We discuss a phenomenological approach to the description of unstable vehicle motion on multilane highways that could explain in a simple way such observed self-organizing phenomena as the sequence of the phase transitions “free flow → synchronized motion → jam” and the hysteresis in them. We introduce a new variable called order parameter that accounts for possible correlations in the vehicle ...
متن کاملDynamic states of a continuum traffic equation with on-ramp.
We study the phase diagram of the continuum traffic flow model of a highway with an on-ramp. Using an open boundary condition, traffic states and metastabilities are investigated numerically for several representative values of the upstream boundary flux f(up) and for the whole range of the on-ramp flux f(rmp). An inhomogeneous but time-independent traffic state (standing localized cluster stat...
متن کاملTraffic Condition Detection in Freeway by using Autocorrelation of Density and Flow
Traffic conditions vary over time, and therefore, traffic behavior should be modeled as a stochastic process. In this study, a probabilistic approach utilizing Autocorrelation is proposed to model the stochastic variation of traffic conditions, and subsequently, predict the traffic conditions. Using autocorrelation of the time series samples of density and flow which are collected from segments...
متن کاملLocation of compressed natural gas stations using multi-objective flow refueling location model in the two-way highways: A case study in Iran
Increasing the use of fossil fuels is with severe environmental and economic problems, bringing more attention to alternative fuels. The compressed natural gas (CNG), as an alternative fuel, offers many more benefits than gasoline or diesel fuel such as cost-effectiveness, lower pollution, better performance, and lower maintenance costs. Gas stations location and the number of gas stations are ...
